Packaging, Labeling and Conveyor Gear Motors

Application Overview

Packaging equipment, labeling machines, small conveyors and product-handling systems often use compact gear motors for indexing, feeding, spacing, guiding, tensioning, label application, flap movement, cutter assistance, rotary adjustment and compact transfer mechanisms. These axes may be used in tabletop packaging equipment, automated production fixtures, inspection stations, light-duty conveyors, labelers, feeders and compact commercial automation.

A packaging or conveyor gear motor should be selected from the actual mechanism rather than from rated motor power alone. Product weight, belt friction, roller diameter, label tension, intermittent motion, acceleration, jam condition, duty cycle, backlash, speed stability, noise and mounting constraints all affect the suitable motor, gearbox and control method.

SigGear can evaluate micro gear motors, compact planetary gearboxes, flat BLDC motors and customized motor/gearbox assemblies for packaging, labeling, feeding, indexing and small conveyor applications. Final model selection, electrical integration, safety guarding, machine-level validation and production approval must be confirmed case by case.

Important Application Boundary

Packaging and labeling equipment may involve customer-specific machine safety, guarding, sanitation, cleaning, electrical safety, CE or regional compliance, production-line reliability and service requirements. This page provides preliminary actuator-selection guidance only.

Unless explicitly confirmed in writing, SigGear does not assume responsibility for:

  • Machine-level safety certification
  • Guarding or emergency-stop validation
  • Food-contact or sanitation compliance of the full machine
  • Production-line availability validation
  • Equipment-level electrical safety certification
  • Final approval for the customer machine or production line

For packaging, labeling or conveyor projects, share the target standards, validation plan, installation environment, drawings, expected annual volume and approval process before quotation.

Key Selection Factors

Requirement Why it matters
Mechanism type Belt conveyors, rollers, label applicators, feeders, cams and indexing axes require different torque-speed behavior.
Product weight Heavier products increase belt load, roller load, acceleration torque and stop/start stress.
Output speed Conveyor speed, label speed and indexing time affect motor speed and gear ratio.
Intermittent duty Start-stop motion creates higher acceleration torque than steady rotation.
Torque margin Friction, product jams, belt tension and misalignment can increase peak torque.
Positioning need Label placement, indexing and gated release may need feedback or homing.
Backlash Some adjustment or indexing axes require controlled backlash.
Noise Compact commercial equipment and operator-facing stations may require lower noise.
Environment Dust, paper debris, food packaging residue, humidity or cleaning exposure may affect configuration.
Custom interface Shaft, flange, cable, connector and mounting details often need machine-specific review.

Common Packaging and Conveyor Use Cases

Small Belt and Roller Conveyors

Light-duty conveyors, product transfer modules and tabletop automation may use gear motors for belts, rollers or small drive wheels. Provide belt width, belt length, roller diameter, product weight, conveyor speed, incline angle, friction condition, start-stop frequency and whether an external bearing supports the load.

Labeling and Tape Application Mechanisms

Labelers, tape applicators and adhesive handling systems may require controlled speed, tension and repeatable placement. Provide label size, web tension, peel force, application speed, roller diameter, feedback requirement, acceleration profile and whether synchronization with another axis is needed.

Feeders, Spacing and Product Release Axes

Feeders, singulators, gates and spacing mechanisms may use compact gear motors to release one product at a time or maintain product spacing. Provide product size, product weight, friction, required cycle time, jam condition, release geometry and whether feedback or home detection is required.

Rotary Indexing and Turntable Adjustment

Small turntables, rotary indexers and inspection fixtures may use planetary gearboxes or gear motors for controlled positioning. Provide rotating mass, radius, required index angle, cycle time, holding requirement, backlash target, external bearing support and expected lifetime cycles.

Tensioning, Width Adjustment and Guide Rails

Packaging machines often need small motors for belt tensioners, guide-rail adjustment, width adjustment, label-head positioning or format-change mechanisms. Provide travel distance, screw pitch or linkage geometry, required force, speed, repeatability, manual adjustment requirement and power-off behavior.

Cutter, Sealer and Flap Assistance

Some compact packaging devices use small motors to assist cutters, sealers, flaps or cover movement. Provide required force, stroke, dwell time, thermal exposure if near sealing components, duty cycle, safety relevance and obstruction condition.

Torque, Speed and Mechanism Review

Packaging and conveyor mechanisms should be reviewed from the load path. A small motor may work well for steady rotation but fail during acceleration, jam recovery or belt-tension changes if peak torque is not considered.

Provide:

  • Equipment type and actuator function
  • Product size and weight
  • Conveyor speed, label speed or indexing time
  • Required output torque or force
  • Peak torque and peak duration
  • Required output speed
  • Stroke length, rotation angle or cycle time
  • Gear ratio if already specified
  • Belt, roller, screw, cam or linkage dimensions
  • Friction, tension, spring, seal or product load
  • Jam, stall or obstruction condition
  • Required lifetime cycles

When torque is not known, provide drawings, test data, estimated forces, prototype videos or measured current curves for review.

Voltage, Current and Control Review

Packaging and labeling equipment may use 12 V, 24 V, 48 V or other DC supplies depending on the control cabinet and machine architecture. The motor, gearbox, driver and control method should be reviewed together.

Clarify:

  • Nominal operating voltage
  • Minimum and maximum operating voltage
  • Peak current limit
  • Continuous current limit
  • Driver supplied by customer or by SigGear
  • Control method
  • Speed-control requirement
  • Positioning or indexing requirement
  • Homing or limit-switch requirement
  • Stall or jam detection method
  • Synchronization requirement with other axes

Do not assume encoder, brake, closed-loop control, CAN, RS485 or another protocol unless it is included in the selected motor and driver configuration.

Reliability, Noise and Maintenance Review

Packaging and conveyor equipment may run frequently and may be maintained by operators or service technicians. Service life, heat, noise, debris, lubrication expectations and replacement method should be defined early.

Provide:

  • Expected cycles per minute or cycles per day
  • Continuous run time
  • Required lifetime cycles or operating hours
  • Operating temperature range
  • Dust, paper debris, humidity or cleaning exposure
  • Noise target and measurement distance
  • Maintenance interval
  • Replacement or service-access method
  • Jam recovery method
  • Acceptable failure mode

Noise and service life are configuration-specific and should be confirmed under representative load, speed, mounting and environmental conditions.

Output Shaft, Mounting and Load Support

Packaging equipment may use pulleys, belts, rollers, gears, cams, screws, turntables or tension arms. These can create radial load, axial load, cantilevered load or shock load on the gearbox output.

Provide:

  • Output shaft shape and length
  • D-cut, spline, gear, keyway or custom shaft requirement
  • Flange and mounting hole requirement
  • Load direction
  • Distance from load point to gearbox face
  • Pulley, roller, gear, cam, screw or linkage geometry
  • External bearing or support method
  • Shock, jam or obstruction condition

External support bearings are recommended when the mechanism creates significant radial, axial or cantilevered load.

Candidate SigGear Product Families

Micro Gear Motors

Micro Gear Motors are a starting point for compact feeders, labelers, guide adjustments, small conveyors, release gates, flap mechanisms and auxiliary packaging axes. SigGear can evaluate miniature planetary gear motors, compact reduction motors, motor and gearbox integration, custom output shafts, flanges and mounting interfaces, and optional encoder or cable integration after engineering review.
